Many….we commonly use this procedure for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, such as joint arthritis, meniscal tears, tendon tears (Rotator cuff, patellar tendonitis, tennis elbow, etc), ligament injuries (chronically sprained ankle, for example). There are a multitude of injuries in which this therapy can be considered.
Some insurances do cover this procedure, while most do not. Research studies on this type of procedure is extremely difficult to standardize- nearly impossible. So, insurance companies often do not provide coverage.
This is a complex topic. The FDA considers PRP to be a “Biologic,” not a “Drug.” As such, and also because of the difficulties with standardized medical research with injections, the FDA does not issue an approval of the device. Preferably not. We want to give your immune system the maximum chance of performing its job and want to take away chemicals that disrupt the immune response. Unless you have a contraindication, Acetaminophen and normal dosing is recommended for the first week.
Each procedure is individualized to the patient. Many find comfort in a short term brace, splint, and/or crutches. We will dispense those to you. We recommend 3-4 days of extremely light activities and 5 days before resuming physical training (such as Physical Therapy).
